Born in Edgemere, NY, Elmo became a carpenter at age 13 and supported hmself from that age. He joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters ending at Ammunition Port in San Francisco Bay. He married Vivian in 1946. He lived in Sonoma from 1954 and had 4 children.
