About
TEAM IN TRAINING (TNT):
Team in
Training (TNT) is the #1 running, walking and cycling endurance training
program in the country, accounting for 25,000 marathoners last year. Participants
undergo personalized training to run or walk in marathons or half-marathons
or to cycle a 100-mile century ride. There are TNT teams in more than
85 markets participating in more than 35 accredited marathons and century
rides nationwide, as well as the Dublin, Vancouver and Bermuda Marathons.
In
the Beginning
The TNT program started in New York in 1986 when Lucy Duffy, a participant
in the New York City Marathon, passed out pledge forms to solicit
donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for each mile she
completed in the 26.2 mile course. Mrs. Duffy raised $30,000 for
the Society. Sadly, her husband lost his life to leukemia two months
later. TNT continued to grow in strength. In 1988 Bruce Cleland,
a volunteer in the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter, whose daughter
was stricken with acute lymphocytic leukemia, developed a team, and
incorporated a training and a fundraising approach with the campaign.
Bruce and his teammates completed the 1988 New York City Marathon,
raising $320,000 for the Society. Team in Training is the original
charitable fundraising marathon program.
Team in Training Fundraising
Goal
Since 1988, Team in Training athletes have raised more than $350 million.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's goal is to raise $75 million in the
2002-2003 fiscal year through TNT.
Participants
raise funds through individual donations and corporate sponsorships. The
money is applied to research, patient aide and public and professional
education programs of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Team in Training Participants
More than 19,000 novice and experienced runners, walkers and cyclists
will experience the thrill and sense of accomplishment that comes from
completing a marathon or century ride. Team Members complete their
events in honor or in memory of a patient with leukemia, lymphoma,
Hodgkin's disease or myeloma. As they begin their own personal challenge,
they are constantly reminded of their "Patient Hero" who
is fighting his/her own battle.
Team in Training Sponsorship
The Team in Training Series is nationally sponsored by Runner's World
magazine and Finish Line. Other local and national sponsorship
opportunities are available.
New
Mexico El Paso Chapter
As of November 2001, approximately 425 walkers, runners and cyclists have
completed the New Mexico/El Paso Chapter's Team in Training program. These
participants have raised nearly one million dollars to support the research,
patient aid, and education programs in New Mexico and greater El Paso.
